Next WoW Expansion: Mists of Pandaria
Blizzard announced today, at BlizzCon, the next expansion for World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria. I know, people have asked for this for a long time, and there's been a Pandaren in the game since Warcraft 3, but still...I just don't know. on the one hand, it's gorgeous, they outdid themselves on it, and it sounds like they have added a good storyline for it. On the other hand, it feels...a little silly. I don't understand why the Pandaren are working for both sides, I'm iffy about the new class (and I hope that it's no a Hero class), and I'm leery of what they are going to do/add to the talent trees. One thing I'm pretty sure about, the "pet battle system" needs to die a horrible fiery death.

It's beautiful, and I do look forward learning the new lore, etc. Just wondering if this is the straw that will break my enjoyment. I left City of Heroes because I lost the immersion of it all. Expansions started to feel less like the continued evolution of the world's story line, and more like "game additions". That's fine and all, but a lot of my enjoyment comes from getting caught up in the world and setting. Some of what Blizz is adding in this new expansion is feeling that way. If that turns out to be the truth, then my days of playing WoW are definitely numbered.

If it's a normal class and not a hero, I'd be all over playing a monk. They're one of my favorite archetypes. And while it is a bit silly, I'd love to play as a Pandaren as well. This expansions launch is probably going to be the next time I re-up for WoW.

If it's a hero class, I'm definitely out; the fucking Death Knight was a fiasco, as far as I'm concerned. I see it'll be availabel to all races, which also annoys me: where have they been all this time? Who taught them? What have they been doing? It makes no sense! Sure, the Pandaren look good, but it's just that "silly" factor that doesn't work as much for me. And why are they playing both sides? It also makes no sense.

This is early days, yet, I'm certainly not gonna flip out and drop the game tomorrow. There's probably a year or more before this even happens, so there's lots of time for things to be explained and set up. It's just that the initial announcement doesn't feel right, and it always bugs me when a group uses the flash to sell something without giving the substance to back it up. I hope to hear more in the coming months.

What'd be cool is if they have updates to the game between now and the expansion on how that continent is discovered and such. A year of questing to find out about it and discover and such would be a great way to build up to it releasing. Maybe something in Deathwing's hoard hints towards it's existence? Thinking of how I as a GM would try to bring about it's arrival in a game.

Agreed. Something so that it doesn't feel like "BAM, here's the new content" dumped in our laps. And maybe they will.

That won't make up for the "pokemon" pet battle bullshit, though. here's hoping that it gets cut, like the "Path of the Titans" system did.

I didn't notice the pet battle thing, that's an odd addition. Aren't hunters enough for people who like pets?

Oh, this is a whole new thing. Companion pets can now "duel" each other. They can get more powerful, and learn new tricks. trainers in the world can train them up, but they may want to battle you first. Rare pets in the game world can be battled and tamed for your further display and use.

Sound familiar? Double-plus-ugh-no-fucking-thank-you.

And as for the death knight, I can see what they were going for with it, but it just didn't implement well.

Also, as for the city of heroes bit, it looks like they are trying to get back to advancing the story with all the incarnate trial stuff and the new story arc they are releasing monthly.

Sure. With Arthas' downfall, it made a certain sense, but it was INCREDIBLY badly implemented.

Yeah, saw some of that, and with it going free, I briefly considered going back, but I'm just too soured on it, and it feels too much like "power gaming". If I do leave WoW, it'll be time for something new. SW:TOR should be plenty established by then....

I'll be getting SW:TOR, and probably posting my impressions of it. It looks to be fairly solid.

This looks like a direct and total ripoff of the Pandala expansion on Dofus. Discovering a new land inhabited by Pandas who do martial arts and fight for other side. Hmm. Seen that before.

Ok, Dofus is French, and cute cartoony.. but the panda island full of martial artists is a big theme there.

If the WoW pandas practice drunken martial arts, then they have the full set.

A Google images search for "Dofus Panda" will probably give you the idea.
