Oprah Fucks A Crowd
Seems Oprah gave away a new car to everyone in her audience recently - 276 cars - and made a lot of people very happy...

...that is, until they realized they'd have to pay up to $7,000 a piece on them in taxes.

Remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

hah...I was meaning to make mention of the car thing, but didn't know/think of the tax part. *shakes head*
Chris: Medalliondeusinnomen on September 23rd, 2004 01:40 am (UTC)
Knew it. Couldn't put a finger on exactly what was being left out, but I damned well knew something wasn't being mentioned. Forgot the rule about prize money being considered income by the IRS.

Nice, huh? Although, both the article and iphinome were right, they could just sell the car and still come out about $17k to $21k on top after everything was said and done... more than enough for a new car still. Just maybe not something as nice as the Pontiac G6s.
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on September 23rd, 2004 01:47 am (UTC)
Oh, absolutely. It's what I'd do: sell the car, pay the tax, use the leftover to get a different car. No one is really out anything, except a really hot new car.

But it's still a kinda underhanded thing to do. Especially to make a media circus of it, to look oh so great. Typical television.
_debi_ on September 23rd, 2004 05:12 am (UTC)
Oh my goodness! I don't know how you can say that! Wheel of Fortune, Price Is Right, all the shows that giveaway cars......... it's all the same thing!

People should be grateful for getting anything! I think it IS great that she spends an HOUR showing neat products and giving them away. I think it IS great that she just handed them a $20,000 profit on THE CAR ALONE!

I think, if someone's gonna bitch about it, all their shit should be taken back!
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on September 23rd, 2004 09:30 am (UTC)
No, no, I agree, these people are still getting something out of it, and should be happy about that. All I'm annoyed by is the fact that Oprah seems to like to build this persona up around herself (and about herself), and the reality isn't as beautiful as she'd like you to believe.

It's all about image.
Deechsavrille on September 23rd, 2004 03:24 pm (UTC)
See, I don't agree. Sure, it was a media stunt, but even with the tax, she just handed them roughly $20,000. That's not much to sneeze at.
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on September 23rd, 2004 04:27 pm (UTC)
Well, I guess my point runs something like this: I do agree that the value was quite nice...shit, I wouldn't complain for a second. But she builds herself up as this intellectual saint, etc., even showing all these happy, tear-streaked faces at the new car they've been given. The truth is that they now either have to shell out $7K to keep the car, or sell it, and pay the $7K out of the cash. that also means going through the hoo-hah of selling the car, etc. True, this isn't that huge of a hardship, just a different reality than "I'm a humanitarian, and I'm giving you this brand-new hotstuff car, enjoy it with my blessing."

What the fuck does any of what you just said have anything to do with Oprah's intellectual sainthood? If anything it simply reinforces the fact that her audience is dummer than she is if they can't grasp the concept that she just gave them 20 grand.

Besides, she doesn't build herself up to be anything but a lover of books. You're building her up because...I don't know why. You've lost me at this point.
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on September 23rd, 2004 08:45 pm (UTC)
It's give and take. She's annoying enough to set up the stupid public to think her a saint, and they in turn are dumb enough to believe it.
Deechsavrille on September 24th, 2004 08:22 am (UTC)
Dude. Don't feed that troll.

Feed me! I'm the troll you want. At least I don't slam you in my journal.

Anyway... I'm pretty sure that he said he was *never* reading your journal again. Something about being a liberal liar...

Sribbles McBottomfootachmanage on September 25th, 2004 09:19 pm (UTC)
I didn't say that.

And you're a dumb ass.
Deechsavrille on September 27th, 2004 08:31 am (UTC)
I know you are but what am I?

Deechsavrille on September 24th, 2004 08:20 am (UTC)
I think I disagree with where you lay the blame.

Anytime anyone gives a gift of any reasonable size, the government takes a piece of it. That's not the gift givers responsability, it's the reciever of the "income". That's just how it is, if you're Oprah or Joe Sixpack.

Just because the government has its gift extortion racket doesn't make Oprah a bad person. There's lots of other good reasons that Oprah isn't a good person, but that's not one of them. :)

I mean, she did give them the car and the company took care of most of the state and local taxes. It's not really their fault the feds want their cut too.

Sribbles McBottomfootachmanage on September 25th, 2004 09:19 pm (UTC)
That's an arguement I would have raised. I believe you and I think the idea of the government having "a cut" of a gift is bullshit.

If I want to give a gift to the government, that's what I'll do but they can wait in line like everyone else.
Barbara Dearaujoibdreamy on September 23rd, 2004 02:12 am (UTC)
OMG!! Haha! 7,000? In taxes? That seems really high..I wonder why so much?
I saw that on TV and was like Wow I wish I was there but now I guess I wouldn't of gotten the car anyway.
_debi_ on September 23rd, 2004 05:08 am (UTC)
I like watching her giveaway shows. Me & Jer were watching that one when it aired. At the end of the show, she gave away those cars & I just sat here with my jaw on the floor. I just said "Jer, she just gave EVERYBODY a fucking car!!"

Trust me, I'd take the car and be happy about it! You could always sellit off and pay the taxes that way. Hell, she just, basically, gave them all $20,000!
oldergoddess on September 23rd, 2004 08:14 am (UTC)
You could also go the bank and take out a loan for $7000, using the car as collateral. Most people would die to buy a new car for $7000, especially as nice as that one was. Again, you could sell the car back to a dealership as a used car (that is all they will give you), pay $7000 to Ophra and still have money to buy a really nice used car, better off than you were before. Everyone knows that anything you get on tv has to be taxed one of two ways: as a gift tax (40% or better) or income tax (around 28%, unless low income and then you might get everything back). Ophra did not get to the richest woman in the world by picking up several million in taxes for others, not to be cynical.
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on September 23rd, 2004 09:36 am (UTC)
No, of course not. All i really am objecting to is this image of saintliness that she would like you to believe. Her company has the cash to give away these dcars, effectively, and that's fine, must be nice and all...but there's a little more to it.

Look at it this way. With all that she's built up around her, etc., my feeling is that she has a certain responsibility to that reputation. To give away these cars with misleading information goes against that responsibility.
oldergoddess on September 23rd, 2004 01:21 pm (UTC)
no argument there, the participants should have had to sign paperwork as soon as they had the car, further her company did not pay a single penny, everything was 'donated' by Pontiac, it was extremely cheap advertising, with very good return, they had pictures of their assembly line shown to a prime time audiance, plus every news story for a week. Again Oprah got off looking like a saint while someone else picked up the tab. Sorry, cynical I am.
Kassiopia: Dariakassiopia13 on September 23rd, 2004 10:04 am (UTC)
well..duh! Of COURSE they have to pay taxes on gifts....However a brand new 28K car for 7K is still a pretty sweet deal and if all else fails make payment plans with the IRS...sheesh...
Sribbles McBottomfootachmanage on September 23rd, 2004 02:27 pm (UTC)
7k a piece?! on TAX?!

I swear, I'm about to start shooting Liberals.
