Permanent Account, Anyone?
OK, kids. LJ has announced a 24 hour permanent account sale. A permanent account is the ultimate prize for a LiveJournal addict, comes with 50 user pictures and all of the current paid features, and has the added convenience in never having to pay for your account again. Considering that they've added a lot of features since the last permanent account sale two years ago, they've upped the price a little, but still, at $150 USD, it's fair. The sale starts Tuesday, June 7th (midnight EST) and will last until Wednesday, June 8th (midnight EST).

These don't sell often (last time was 2 years ago). Obviously, it's not for everyone...Hell, the post in news about it is heavily sprinkled with people whining about how it's not worth it to them to pay this much for it unless it comes with more user icons than you could possibly ever use in a lifetime (those people scare me; how many damn icons does any one person really need? Especially when they are boring!). Lots of people don't use their journals enough to justify paying for a permaccount. Hey, fine, nothing wrong with that. However, if you do use it a lot, plan to keep doing so, and have the cash, this is your chance.

Join us. The few, the proud, the elite...The Permanent.

Heck man, I was with The Permanents a while ago...

I'm hoping I can find a way to get one. Pushing to get one as a birthday present seems the only way at the moment.

You know...I'm sorry Frank, but for less than that, you can have your own website with your own blog. $150 of LJ is like 6 years of it, and before I hit my 6 year mark, I hope to have my own webpage and know how to code it.

So...you can be proud, but I think I have higher aspirations than a permanant account on LJ.

Carl pointd out to me that it sounded a bit mean. i don't mean you shouldn't be happy about having a permanant account. It's just...I see LJ as a tool and not something that should mean so much to us. I don't know, I'm drifting away from the internet, and the things I thought were important are no longer so. Call me cynical if you want. I wasn't trying to personally attack you.

You're one person. You want to drift away form the internet, I applaud you. You're tastes change, that's good. You see it as a tool. Great. But there's no need to come in here and act like MY choice of enjoying and appreciating getting an upgrade to that "tool" is such a sad thing.
wesa on June 1st, 2005 01:40 am (UTC)
Well, I could say that it is just like you going to me or going to C1 and telling us how stupid we are for wanting to see an upcoming movie on our own LJ's instead of just taking the link and running with it only on your LJ.

Opinions are what makes the internet go 'round. If it makes you very angry to have someone disagree with you, that's your own issue.

Let's not get out of hand, here...I think we know each other better than that. I wasn't angry at being disagreed with, I was upset at the attitude that was foisted on me. That has been dealt with, and thus I'm no longer annoyed.
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Roll: Wrong!archmage on June 1st, 2005 01:34 am (UTC)
On the other hand, your own site/blog is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Most lower-end users don't want to deal with setting up all that, much less all the extra hooplah involved with site maintenence. They want a blog, and this gives it to them, plus helps support the site that gives it to them.

As for "less than that"...wrong. Not in the long run. Websites are a continuing cost, and one that you will not reach the end of unless you host your own server. A permanent LJ is a one-time fee, never to be charged again. More up front, yes, but better in the long run...for someone that knows they'll keep it up, and doesn't have or need your "higher aspirations".

Careful, you're coming across with a very smarmy, condescending tone to me. Don't forget that I DO have my own webpage, I DO know how to code, and I do more with it than just run a blog on it. And I still have a permanent LJ. I'm all for having "higher aspirations" than an LJ, but there's no need to come across this way.
wesa on June 1st, 2005 01:38 am (UTC)
I know you have your own webpage. Please read my second comment to you. I didn't realize I had such a snarky tone until Carl pointed it out. Come on, it's the internet, and everything looks worse than it is.

Accepted.

Hahaha! But permanant LJ accounts are still here for the little people. We're easily pleased. I want one now.

I hope to have my own webpage and know how to code it.

Ah, you say that now...But I bet in a moment you'll say you're drifting away from the internet. Oh look, you did!

i've wondered how some people could have the permanent status without actually being involved with lj. But according to the FAQ page, the only bonus is the 50 icons (and those only cost something like 10 bucks) so it seems weird to pay that much... how much was it 2 years ago?

unless someone could anonymously pay for the 150 for someone else, that'd be fun. :)
God of Thunder and Rock'n'Rollarchmage on June 1st, 2005 01:41 am (UTC)
the only bonus is the 50 icons

Actually...the "only" bonus is every damn feature on LJ, permanently. You get it all, right then and there, and if new features come up, you get them tacked on, immediately, for all time.

2 years ago, it was $100. that was 4 years worth of paid time. Now, a year with those extra icons is $35, so 4 years worth would be $140. Add in Scrapbook, and the figure is still fair. Plus, like I said, anything else that comes along, it's yours.

bad frackin' timing:(!

On a totally unrelated note: I beg the master for two icon requests. Here are the phrases- the rest is up to you:

"Don't make me get my flying monkeys!"

"Things haven't been the same since that house fell on my sister..."

completely off topic
jonesing for a new icon.

I don't really have a rightous rage icon... and the Bondock Saint's icon reminded me very much of that... not asking for your BD Saint's icon.. but if you happen to get bored one like it full of rightous rage would be cool.

Re: completely off topic
Actually, the BD icon was made for anyone to use, so if you want it, go for it.
