Dig This: The Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin, voicing strong criticism of Christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally.

Basically, the statement says that evolution and Biblical descriptions are perfectly compatible, if the Bible is read correctly; that "the Universe didn't make itself and there was a Creator", but the precise details of how things came to be is left up to Science. The statements were interpreted in Italy as a rejection of the "intelligent design" view, which says the universe is so complex that some higher being must have designed every detail.

So, Signore Pope has said Intelligent Design is foolish, huh? I like him better already. Wonder what the ID proponents will make of this? probably ignore the implications and instead see it as support for their bullshit view.
