Let's see:

Slightly early to bed...fall asleep reading the latest expansion to "The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe"...have bizarre dreams that wake me up more than once...wake up again because Dianna wakes up from a nightmare...go back to sleep and have incredibly strange dreams...finally awake. Man, what a night.

So, I have a question, and since at least a couple of you do this, maybe you can help: why do people sign their posts/comments with their name? Since the post/comment comes from the account, it's obvious who did it, thus, why the need to sign a name again? I'm curious.

i suspect that people who do this for their posts as well as their comments don't perceive their actions as merely the scribbling in a journal, theirs or otherwise. if anything, it's like leaving a note for someone. it's the same logic behind signing your email. i mean, why do you need to since the from: address field says so anyway? i think it's equal parts formality, politeness and habit.

See, I get that, but at the same time, it's incredibly redundant. At least an e-mail is akin to a letter, so I can dig it more. I'm all for gentility, you know this, but signing a blog comment feels...well, at the small end, kinda pointless, at the far end, a hair arrogant, or at least, self-aggrandizing.

*shrug*

oh i don't disagree with it being ridiculously redundant and of no use. but i wouldn't go so far as to say that it's arrogant necessarily. cyanidesgirl brings up a good point that it personalizes communication. especially in the case where what's signed is the person's actual name or what they go by rather than just going by the preceding login/username that may not be the same thing.

I don't get that either. Although I do sign my global when I post in the CoH communities because it's different from my LJ username.

I have a friend who does it because she's just very, very polite. She doesn't even swear.

Low intelligence. ;)

I occasionally do it to mimic/connote the formality of other methods of communication, but only very rarely.
