So, in the end, the company that sold me the headset apologized for the inconvenience and had me ship it back to them, where they say they will test it themselves, then send me a tested working set at their expense. They had a response back to my complaint within a couple hours, and that felt pretty good.

It'll feel better if I get a working headset.
