Fix It And Forget It

Been a long day of drive play today...cleaned up my desktop, massive file replacement and defrag, cleanup of redundant and unused files and downloads, the works. Well, with the occasional game-break, of course. ;)

Best Laid Plans

OK, here's how last night was supposed to go down:

Di and I were going to go to the Ohm, meet up with karzon, delilahbowie, and jahnji there, give J his b'day present, and see 'Dahlia', the band that plays there every Tuesday night that they all rave about.

Here's what actually happened:

We got there a tad early, and walked in on the opening band (The Fading Collection) just getting to the end of their set. They seemed odd at first (two girls singing, bass and drumkit behind), but it grew on us quickly. They were fantastic...hell, we even bought their CD. We got comfy, and eventually, as Dahlia took the stage, karzon showed up and hung with us for a little. We discovered that delilahbowie was sick, and therefore not showing up, and no one had heard from jahnji, but we never saw him. Well, at least we got to hear Dahlia. We left rather early and came home.

Now, they make think I'm crazy, but I don't see what the hype is. The best I can figure, Dahlia appears to be an odd mix of trip-hop, experimental breakbeat, and basic techno spinning, fronted by a female singer. The guy on the tables came off very amateurish, his cuts were all over the place, effects were WILDLY out of volume normalization, and all in all sounded like someone who had just bought their first set of turntables and didn't really know what he was doing yet. The girl, on the other hand, was fan-fucking-tastic. A vocal range that puts most people to shame, amazing control, and a beautiful ear for tone made her VERY enjoyable to listen to. She reminded me, at various points, of Diamanda Galas, Joan Osborne, Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, and Toni Halliday of Curve. My personal opinion is that she is wasted on this combo, and would do better with a real group backing her up...but hey, she's happy doing what she's doing, and more power to her.
