Geeky Is Not Trendy...And Vice Versa

You've all heard/read me rant and bitch about the lack of creativity in Hollywood, anymore. Hell, just this morning, Dusty and I were going on about the fact that the number of remakes/reboots/whatever seems to be skyrocketing, and how it just feels like no one cares. Shortly thereafter, i think my questions were answered...

"What was previously perceived as nerdy is now viewed as original. What I like about nerdiness, geekiness, is it doesn’t really matter what you’re into - it just means you’re not a follower." - Kristen Bell

Wow. Ms. Bell, could you have possibly missed the mark any worse? If it was previously perceived, it is, by definition not "original" now. No, it's now seen as "trendy", much like alternative music was in the early 90's. What was once obscure and in its own way 'geeky' became mainstream, and blew up everywhere. You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone in a flannel shirt. Radio stations were loudly proclaiming their 'alternative' status while playing music that was at the top of the charts. It wasn't suddenly original, it was the latest trend, and just like every other trend, the sheep ate it up and followed it. Just like boy bands, hip-hop, hair metal. All these had a following long before they got huge, and each broke like a wave and became The Thing. Not just music, either, I'm sure you can think of so many trends that, once huge, were full of come-lately fans who felt they were the experts...who had been the 'experts' of the last trend, too.

You are correct about one thing, Ms. Bell. It does have that thought that it means you're not a follower. However, posing with an icon of a huge new trend makes you exactly the opposite. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for the discovery of something new, and in appreciating it, learning all you can and finding something you enjoy that you previously did not know. This is how it spreads. This doesn't make you a geek anymore than my doing a high school play makes me an actor. If you've kept it close to your heart when others mock it, when it's been left behind for the Next Big Thing, when it's not cool anymore, THEN you are a geek and not just a follower.

R.I.P. Peter Graves

Actor Peter Graves found dead at his home

Actor Peter Graves was found dead Sunday at his home in Pacific Palisades, according to law enforcement sources. He was 83, and the death was apparently just due to natural causes. For all that some of his early work was a bit stilted and cheesy, he was a great actor and will be missed. I'm sure most people will watch Mission: Impossible (not the recent Cruise farce, damn you) or Airplane in memory of him, but I shall be viewing Killers From Space.
