What?!?

(no subject)

A lot of the details are fuzzy, but I just got up from a long involved dream. At one point I was some kind of martial arts master/superhero who could also fly (and unlike my normal in-dream flying, it worked fairly well). Later on, I lived in a big train (which was pretty cool) and was smuggling illegal cheese for profit. By the end, I was back in my place, here, but I had just moved here from somewhere far away and was sorta lamenting that I had done it, though I knew praenomenal was coming to visit.

Good morning to you, too. Friday Pix will be up soon.

Cory Doctorow (BoingBoing) posted an article this morning titled "Why I won't buy an iPad (and think you shouldn't, either)". Now, this is coming from a fairly techie point of view, but it does raise some good points, I felt.

Yes, we all know I'm not an Apple guy. If Apple can manage to market and sell something that has been tried more than once, good for them, but let's consider that they have something of a rabidly built-in audience. Of course, i also feel like we're slowly but surely dumbing down the population, so something like this is probably just what a lot of them want: simple and is only really serviced and handled by one group, thus not a lot to learn.

Cory's bent doesn't take into account the fact that most people don't want to think or modify or play, they want to be marshmallow fluff as much of the time as possible. This explains why huge-budget, CGI-filled movie remakes still get people to pay exorbitant amounts of money to see, why 400 channels of TV is still not enough for some folks, and why reading is becoming less popular. With that in mind, the iPad is just right.
