Thoughts on the new Architect System: oh, for fucks' sakes.
I dunno, the whole idea just annoys me, in a low-grade way. We constantly report bugs and mistakes, and they never get fixed, issue after issue, but something like this gets made, something that took a ton of resources. Why? Look, I want new content, too, sure, but I also want a smooth game. Take the time to make what we HAVE work, first. This comes off feeling like a cheesy sort of excuse to not make content, b y making us make our own.
When the Police Scanner hit CoH, it helped with a lot of things, namely, getting to contacts that you wanted. However, for months on end,m it was all a team did, random fluff mission after random fluff mission. No one cared about the story or the game itself, just about the grind...very much like WoW, and exactly what I liked that this game was not. The Merit Reward system made arcs desirable again, but only really for those that were still into grinding for phat loot. Point is, it was added and made the game less interesting (like the whole IO system in general, in my opinion).
So, now, we get something that makes you even LESS likely to play the game or care about it, and more likely to drool? Be honest, you know what';s gonna be going on: for a few months, Atlas Park is going to be nothing but broadcast chatter of people advertising their specific mission, begging for votes. A huge chunk of the missions will be underpowered little breeze-fests, made by people that want an easy way to grind to 50, another chunk over-powered bullshit by people with no concept of good play or balance. Story? Reason? Finding these things will be like looking for hay in a needle-stack.
Yes, there will be pearls in the muck, of course. There will be those who will take the time to write out thoughtful and intriguing stories, create well-balanced and challenging critters, and make well-built story arcs. Is this tiny sliver worth putting the rest of the game on hold, ignoring the bugs in the game while creating new ones? Not for me, it isn't.
And look closer at this. XP and influence rewards for player-created missions are exactly the same as any other mission rewards. Now, this doesn't mention merits, salvage, or recipes, so I'm hoping they have been left out. it's already going to be possible to simply go from 1-50 in this content, so the powerlevel crowd is gonna go ape (and rate their missions highly, and get rewarded EVEN MORE for this crap), but allowing the full reward drops will make them too much.
I'm all for creativity. I just dislike seeing the game take what I perceive as another downturn away from the rich and deep world that it has, in order to be more like every other MMO. It's going strong and has a dedicated player-base...in my opinion, it should strive to continue to stand out and be different and unique, not just another deathmatch, free-for-all, treasure-hunt grind.
