Internet Maturity

40 years after the first pair of computers were linked on the prototype of the 'Net, history is made again. The US government has relaxed its control over how the internet is run. It has signed a four-page "affirmation of commitments" with the net regulator ICANN, giving the body autonomy for the first time. ICANN was set up by the US government, and has always reported to the US. ICANN's reviews will now be available to be turned over to a global community, instead of just the US government.

Impressive. I never thought the US would give up ICANN's control, but there really was no choice, if it was to stay relevant. Good job.
