Good Idea/Bad Idea

Good Stuff: The EyeWriter - a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus + custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes. And by low-cost, we're talking a functional computer and ~$100. Pretty damn nifty.

Bad Stuff: The Transborder Immigrant Tool - Using a Motorola i455 cell phone (which is under $30, available even cheaper on eBay) which includes a free GPS applet, and adding custom built and freely distributed software, Ricardo Dominguez was able to crack it and create a simple compass-like navigation system. The idea is to make this available as a "safety tool" to illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border into America. They added other information, like where to find water left by the Border Angels, where to find Quaker help centers that will wrap your feet, how far you are from the highway, etc., all to help avoid the U.S. Border Patrol and associated authorities. He's completely open about it, and likes that he's a thorn in the side of the American government, and it's not like he hasn't fucked with them before with predictable results. Seriously? This is what's called "bad for the movement", Rickie. The more you do crap like this, the angrier they get and the more likely it is that more draconian measures get implemented, using examples like you to make their case about how bad the situation is and why we need more guards, etc. Thanks for making it worse, jackass.
