When last we left our intrepid hero, he mentioned something about wishing on a star, so we'll start there. Things had just gone to Hell at my Dad's place, I was in a crappy mood, and life was basically a bucket of shit.
When Jessica's brother first moved his girlfriend into the house, he didn't ask anyone else, he just sorta did it. Jessica's mom looked at Jessica and said "you aren't moving your new guy here, are you?" Understandable. Well, turns out that she was just being sarcastic. When she heard about what a bad time I was having in Wisconsin, and when she saw how miserable Jessica was without me, she said that, hell, he should just come here. I heard this and thought that it had to be a joke, no way could it be true. Besides, I still had no money, no way to contribute to the house. I asked Jessica to confirm that her mom wasn't kidding, that she was serious and that she knew that *I* knew what all this entailed (i.e. food for another person, etc.). With this excitement in my mind, I was wired. I ended up going for a long walk, taking my Dad's dog with me.
We walked for about half an hour. I had my music player going, and it was a nice night. As we walked, I saw that single star up there, and I couldn't help it, I wanted this so badly that I wished for it. As the last words went through my brain, my phone buzzed at me.
Jessica on text. Mom not only said 'yes', she told Jessica to buy my train tix. Holy shit.
So, skipping the excitement and all, it was time for logistics again. I really didn't want to do that train, as they were bitchy about my stuff last time, but 16 hours is a long way to have to drive to pick me up (Newport News to Racine). I decided to take a long shot, and dropped an e-mail to
That, my friends, is true family.
Safely in Virginia, it was just down to Jessica making a short, 4-hour drive to get me. The original plan was for her to come up, stay the night and have some us-time, and go back, but her Mom came with her, which was probably a good thing. It let me meet her right up front, and made sure everyone was safe on the road. They got there, we packed up, and I took the wheel for the drive back.
So, here I am, in Newport News. I'm moved into the house with Jessica, her mom, her brother, and her brother's girl. Gotta start looking for work. I like it here, and part of that is just being back Down South again. I've offered to work around the house while I'm here, and I get the distinct impression that her mom likes me. Partly, I'm a stand-up guy. Partly, I make her daughter happy. Either way, it's all good. We'll be here until such time as we can get our own place. That' fine, though, because anywhere I can be with her is home.
