Picked up numerauko's prescription again. this is the last of this pain med they'll give her, and we're trying to get in to a neurologist tomorrow. it's gonna cost plenty, but it's a lot sooner than the one that said they could get us in in November. No way can she take this head pain that long. If it doesn't kill her, the heavy pain med use will...and nothing else gets the pain under control, so what can we do?

Video card caused another BSoD today, this time on a fullscreen YouTube video. Card is dying, and faster than I like, but I just got my tracking number for the new one's delivery in today's e-mail, so hope is on the way. Sure hope it's the video card, anyway...the culprit keeps coming back to nv4_disp.dll, which is part of the drivers. They were updated two days ago to the newest ones (ones less than a month old!), so it's gotta be something in the card itself. Needless to say, I'm just a hair nervous, but no surprise there.

Reset the router today to try and make the WiFi accessible (it would connect on the Netbook, but there was no actual activity). Upon resetting it, all machines had no connection, and that made my day oh-so-much better. Still, doggedly fucked with settings and reboots of modem and router until everything worked. The upside to this is that I can stay in bed in the mornings when I wake up at 5am and still check my e-mail and whatnot, but Jessica doesn't have to feel like I've left. Snuggles and connection: no complaints there!

Strikes and gutters, ups and downs. My stress levels are high because I'm worried about Jessica, and it's overshadowing everything else...not to mention that it's now 10 months since I left Portland, and I'm no closer to getting my stuff out here than I was then, and that bugs me, on both a personal and friendship level: I'm heartily sorry, madeofmeat, this was never my intention.

Most of the time, I feel like I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just winging it. Luckily, that has worked more often than not, and having the love of a good woman helps a lot.

Just a thought - re-run the Nvidia installer for your drivers, and do the custom setup and have it do a completely clean install. That may fix the bad driver DLL issue.

Tried that, no dice.

evil evil GPUs.

I wish I had some good advice for you. Unfortunately it might not even be your gpu drivers. I had the same problem with my 8800. It ended up being a known issue with onboard & pci sound card drivers. When they updated all of the video went to hell. I eventually had to chose: sight or sound. Worse news, depending on the conflict your new nvidia card might not cut it.

If you do have more issues after you get the new card, the conflict might be with the sound card (especially if your new gpu has a HDMI port on it). Keep us posted.

sorry, forgot to add, the old 8800 worked perfectly on an old mobo sans onboard audio and no sound card with a pre-Vista OS (XP).

sorry, I still lurk. Sorry if I haven't been active. My wife thoroughly enjoys your Friday pix! :)

Yeah, this system is XP.

Yeah, this is an 8800 GT. I don't think it's the drivers, really, i think it's the hardware of the card itself. The system has the sound as part of the mobo (ASUS P5N-E), so I hope this isn't a conflict wqith onboard sound. The way it is dying, though, suggests breakdown of hardware, gettign slowly worse, so...*shrug*

I can hope.

For me the problem began compounding after an update to drivers other than the GPU. They were installed over a period via Windows Update so there was no easy roll-back solution. Mine started with random blue screens and slowness/delays in starting and ended with not booting passed a login screen.

Yikes. So far, the only issues I've seen are with Warcraft, and that one instance of a video crashing the system. Other than that, smooth sailing.

*crosses fingers*

I like having plans.. but yeah "winging it" describes a good portion of my life too. You're doing the best you can with what you've got, though I know that doesn't really make you feel better about it.

...and we've had some new developments which are gonna make things a little tougher on us around here, to top it all off. Still, as you say, gotta do what you can with what you got, right? Better to keep trying than to stagnate, I always say.

Oddly enough, it DOES help, hun. Thanks.
