Christ people...stop and think about this for a second. Ever heard the phrase 'you get what you pay for'? You gotta remember that this is a free service, maintained by people that do not get paid for what they do. The more people that come on board, the more work that has to be done, and the more mongoloids that show up, wanting nothing more than to fuck with things...and the more hardware that has to be available, and working. It's easy to think that the 'Net should be free, but that's because the inner workings are transparent to you...you don't see all the equipment and work involved.
Let me throw a few stats at you: there are a total of 876517 users (as of 11:30 this morning). Of those, 813753 are free accounts (that's a whopping 92.8%!). Only 45710 (5.2%) are paid accounts, and only 1585 (0.2%) are permanent (leaving 14162 [1.6%] early adopters).
On an interesting side note, since I'm talking stats:
Total users: 876517
Users that have ever updated: 729052
Users updating in last 30 days: 327623
Users updating in last 7 days: 233780
Users updating in past 24 hours: 99166
147465 accounts have NEVER updated? What the hell...sad part is that a lot of these accounts are ones set up by someone who was banned from somewhere, just so they can smart off again about something, or just so they can have more icons, or something.
93% of you are getting this for free, and that's a shitload of people NOT paying for a site that is closing in on a million users...a site that has not resorted to taking ANY advertising money. And you wanna bitch because the harrowed workers want to make things run smoother? I see people bitch about LJ being slow, or down for maintenence, or what have you...but I don't see you supporting it. Obviously, I'm not ranting about EVERY free user; lots are understanding about it, and/or help out in whatever way they can. But come on, think about it: this takes work, and things have to be done. If that means, as it grows, that a few more stringent rules have to be implemented, then so be it; the rules that work for 100,000 users will not work for 1,000,000 (which the US needs to figure out as well, but I'm not getting into that right now).
Yes, I support the post limits. I know what a pain that will be for some of these users that make 50 posts a day, all one line, and all pointless, and I'm sorry for them...but it's clutter like that which slows things down for EVERYONE. Frankly, I think if you look, you'll see that this isn't so bad...as the article says, a small percentage will be really affected, but for the most part, it'll work out just fine (though I would support making the free user post limit five instead of three, that seems a tad harsh).
Of course, as always, you COULD pay for the account, and have no worries, and support the site that you use so much. I don't wanna hear how you can't: if you cannot scrape up $25 ($2 a month, approximately), then you need to get off of LJ and get a job. Cut back on your smokes/coffee/caffeine/comics/pot/etc for one month, that should pay LJ for a year. Hell, you could scrounge that up just going around the 'hood and cutting lawns for one day. No credit card or paypal? SOMEONE you know will help you with that. Hell, ask for it for a birthday/holiday present...just do it.
Long and short of it is that when you do not pay for it, you have very little say in what happens: you are a USER, not a PARTICIPANT. There is a big difference. I'm not saying that you have to just sit there and take the punishment, but stop and think about what is punishment and what is necessary for the SITE before you start flaming Brad about how unfair things are.
